The Three-Body Problem donghua series premiered on December 3, 2022.
Out of the blue, the eponymous Chinese TV series made a silent debut. I wrote about it here, but at the time there was no word on what happened to the production or when the series might premiere.
The Three-Body Problem Chinese TV show was produced by Tencent Video, directed by Fanfan Zhang, and stars Feng Shaofeng and Zhang Jingchu, among others.
While we’re awaiting the official English dub of The Three-Body Problem donghua series, give this gem a go.
If you missed the developments leading to this much-anticipated donghua adaptation, let’s clarify a bit.
The Three-Body Problem (三体) is based on the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” Hugo Award-winning sci-fi trilogy by Liu Cixin. “The Three-Body Problem” is the title of the first installment of the series, with the remaining two being “The Dark Forest” and “Death’s End.”
The trilogy is licensed in English. The English translation by Ken Liu was released from November 2014 to September 2016 by Tor Books.
The title refers to the three-body problem in orbital mechanics.
“Remembrance of Earth’s Past” won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the first Asian work ever to get this prestigious achievement.
The Three-Body Problem synopsis reads:
“1967: Ye Wenjie witnesses Red Guards beat her father to death during China’s Cultural Revolution. This singular event will shape not only the rest of her life but also the future of mankind.
Four decades later, Beijing police ask nanotech engineer Wang Miao to infiltrate a secretive cabal of scientists after a spate of inexplicable suicides. Wang’s investigation will lead him to a mysterious online game and immerse him in a virtual world ruled by the intractable and unpredictable interaction of its three suns.
