The Three-Body Problem donghua series was originally planned to debut on December 3, 2022. The release date was recently postponed to December 10, 2022.
BiliBili is producing the series, which is based on Liu Cixin’s “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” Hugo Award-winning sci-fi trilogy.
The trilogy was published in China from May 2008 to November 2010; in addition to “The Three-Body Problem” (Pt. 1), the series also features two installments, namely “The Dark Forest” and “Death’s End.”
The trilogy (三体) was licensed for an English-language release years back and was published from November 2014 to September 2016. The English translation by Ken Liu was published by Tor Books in the US.
The title refers to the three-body problem in orbital mechanics.
The novel won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel — The Three-Body Problem is the first Asian work ever to earn this prestigious award.
Generally speaking, the work is regarded to be a seminal Sci-Fi title, providing a unique angle never seen before.
More the reason to anticipate the upcoming donghua adaptation!
With just two days left until the big date, let’s get in the mood by revisiting the latest The Three-Body Problem trailer PV:
Hopefully, the donghua will live up to the novels’ high standards. Given that BiliBili is producing the series, expectations are high.
The plot is set in a fictional timeline where an alien civilization emerges in a nearby star system. Adding anything else to the description would be spoiling it for people who haven’t read the books.
If you are a fan of audiobooks, you’ll find the entire “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy in English here.

Another The Three-Body Problem TV adaptation, this time Chinese, was produced by Tencent Video, directed by Fanfan Zhang, and starring Feng Shaofeng and Zhang Jingchu, among others. The past tense is intentional: scilicet, the shooting is finished but, for some mysterious reason, there are no updates on the show’s premiere.
UPDATE: The Chinese TV adaptation is live on YouTube. A subscription is not required. See more here: You Should be Watching: The Three-Body Problem CHINESE TV Series
You can see the movie trailer here.
Another Liu Cixin’s novel, titled “The Wandering Earth” was adapted into a movie and released in 2019. It was hugely successful, which just may be an understatement. The film is the second highest-grossing Chinese film of all time, so there’s no reason why The Three-Body Problem movie would be any different.
Nevertheless, we’ll have to wait a bit to learn the release date of this adaptation.
The Three-Body Problem Manhua Series

The Three-Body Problem manhua got a global launch in multiple languages and is the first Chinese comic series ever to earn this honor.
